Nike's "Secret Tournament" Ad Inspired This Mercurial "Scorpion" Pack

Nike Football's next-gen Mercurial Vapor 17 and Superfly 11 unveiled shortly before the 2026 World Cup™ tournament, but it's already amassing color schemes. For its latest makeover, the speed-focused duo has taken a trip to 2002 for a scorpion-inspired look.

In its star-studded Polaroid campaign that kicked off the "12 Weeks of Football" strategy, the Swoosh included a picture of a scorpion that might've been overlooked by most spectators fixated on the celebrity of Kim Kardashian, Travis Scott, and others. Diehard fans of the Nike Football universe, however, quickly recalled the brand's "Secret Tournament" campaign for the 2002 World Cup™ upon seeing the deadly creature.

This ad featured 24 of the era's top footballers—including Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Luís Figo, and Paul Scholes—split into eight teams of three. These teams were invited to participate in a secret tournament officiated by the legendary Eric Cantona in which the "first goal wins."

When compared to adidas and PUMA, Nike was still a fairly young player in the global football space. Yet, "Secret Tournament" (sometimes referred to as "Scorpion KO" or "The Cage") demonstrated that the brand had a clear vision for its style of play—fast, deadly, and cool. The scorpion, a motif spray-painted onto visuals for the campaign, captured the Swoosh's identity perfectly; its roster of sponsored athletes reflected it as well.

Throughout the years, Nike has referenced the scorpion in marketing and product, with the most recent example being Cristiano Ronaldo's "Gold Scorpion" Superfly 11. A newly-surfaced duo of the company's next-gen Mercs further nod to the lethal creature, delivering an eye-catching aesthetic to those willing to fill in the boots of Ronaldo Nazário, Francesco Totti, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and others.

The Vapor 17's Atomknit upper and Superfly 11's FlyWeave Ultra construction indulge in a mix of near-fluorescent reds and bold blues. Scorpion-informed black stripes run along the profiles, while shimmering silver Swooshes claim much of the forefoot.

Underfoot, sole plate setups follow the top-halves' vibrant aesthetics, ensuring the opposition can enjoy the view as you leave them behind.
