Despite it being the annual Grey Days calendar month, New Balance is continuing to loosen its grip on greyscale, drawing inspiration from Maryland for an all-new "Blue Crab" Pack.
Long known for understated palettes across its Made in USA line, the brand has spent the past few seasons introducing brighter, more expressive options into the mix — and the upcoming New Balance 990v4 “Tangerine” and “Magic Blue” continue that shift in a big way.
Set to release on May 7, both pairs lean into color more heavily than most traditional 990 offerings, highlighted by rare colored midsoles that immediately separate them from the brand’s usual neutral-heavy formula. Myles Williams, Associate Product Manager at New Balance and Maryland-native, took to Instagram to share that the "Blue Crab" 990v4s are "for the ones who joan and crack crabs with they aunties...," continuing a trend of pulling from the DMV area for story-driven releases. (He's one of the reasons one could argue Wale should sign with New Balance.)
The New Balance 990v4 “Tangerine” arrives in warm-weather-ready shades, pairing creamy Moonbeam suede overlays with soft grey detailing and breathable orange mesh underlays. Underfoot, a vivid orange ENCAP midsole steals the spotlight, marking one of the more striking tooling executions seen on a Made-in-USA 990 in recent memory.
The New Balance 990v4 “Magic Blue” takes a cooler approach. Pale blue mesh uppers are balanced by off-white suede overlays and muted grey trim, while the sole unit introduces a deeper blue finish that contrasts noticeably against the lighter upper. Importantly, the midsole shade is darker and more saturated than the airy blue mesh above it, giving the pair more depth than a simple tonal execution.

That distinction helps the pair stand apart from some of New Balance’s previous blue-based releases, while still fitting comfortably within the growing category of more colorful Made-in-USA offerings.
Despite the brighter presentation, both sneakers remain faithful to the 990v4’s original design language. Premium suede construction, layered paneling, reflective accents, and the familiar ENCAP cushioning setup all remain intact, preserving the heritage runner’s identity while offering something slightly different from the norm.
As New Balance continues expanding its lifestyle footprint globally, releases like the "Blue Crab" Pack show the brand becoming increasingly comfortable experimenting beyond its traditional earth-tone playbook.
Expect both the New Balance 990v4 “Tangerine” and New Balance 990v4 “Magic Blue” to release on May 7 via NewBalance.com and select retailers.
