Throughout Air Jordan history — particularly over the last quarter century in the post-retirement era — many new designs have drawn references from earlier models through subtle design cues and abstract nods to iconic details. The Air Jordan 40 is taking a far less restrained approach with its expanding “40/X” concept, presenting what are essentially direct hybrids of past silhouettes reimagined through the lens of Jordan Brand’s fortieth signature model.
Using the Air Jordan 40 as its foundation, Jordan Brand’s design team has begun transplanting defining elements from previous models directly onto the modern chassis. Rather than referencing heritage pairs through color or minor accents, the project brings unmistakable features from earlier signatures directly onto the upper.
Earlier examples helped set the tone. The Air Jordan 40/16 incorporated the midnight navy patent leather toe and removable gaiter made famous by the Air Jordan XVI, while the upcoming Air Jordan 40/23 borrows the stitched paneling and visual texture seen on the Air Jordan XX3. Across the board, the response to the concept has been strong, with the series leaning heavily into nostalgia while keeping the Air Jordan 40 positioned as a modern performance model.

Next in the spotlight is the Air Jordan 40/28, which channels the distinctive design language of the Air Jordan XX8. The most recognizable feature is the fold-down zippered shroud covering the upper, mirroring the 2013 model's signature look. When unzipped, the interior reveals stylized “2” and “3” numerals on the inner flaps — a direct nod to the original XX8’s layered design — while a bright volt-green interior echoes the launch colorway that introduced the silhouette over a decade ago.
Despite the heavy heritage influence, the Air Jordan 40/28 remains built on the Air Jordan 40’s modern platform, merging contemporary performance tooling with one of the most experimental designs from Jordan Brand’s past.
Two colorways of the Air Jordan 40/28 are expected to release this year. Pairs have already surfaced at select European retailers, though a Stateside release for the Air Jordan 40/28 has not yet been confirmed.
