During WNBA All-Star Weekend, we caught up with Nike Basketball Product Line Manager Alex Zerzan and designer Ben Nethongkome for a closer look at Caitlin Clark’s first signature sneaker, the Slamin for a closer look at Caitlin Clark’s first signature sneaker, the Nike Caitlin 1.
The duo broke down the design process behind the model, revealing several small details that can easily go unnoticed. Across the upper, the textured micronodes carry two different shapes: tiny “C” markings appear on the lateral side, while the medial side features miniature “2” details, combining to represent Clark’s initials and No. 22 jersey number.
Another personal message appears beneath the foot, where the phrase “It was never a long shot” is worked into the midfoot area of the outsole. The line connects directly to Clark’s game and the deep shooting range that has become one of her defining traits.
Zerzan and Slamin also explained the idea behind the Caitlin 1’s early colorways. The design team focused on Clark’s duality: away from basketball, she is relatable and down-to-earth, but once she steps onto the court, a switch flips and she becomes a relentless, magnetic competitor.
That contrast inspired the model’s inversion concept. When viewed through an inverted-color camera, the “Racer Blue” colorway transforms into the “Yellow Zest” look, and vice versa. The two pairs were intentionally designed as opposites, reflecting the different sides of Clark’s personality and game.
The duo shared that the purple Caitlin 1 is currently among their favorite colorways, with several additional releases still to be revealed. More than anything, they are excited to see young players experience Clark’s signature sneaker and feel some of the same confidence she carries onto the court—even if that means attempting a few more deep threes.
The Nike Caitlin 1 is set to debut in October 2026, with multiple colorways expected throughout its opening run.
