Edison Chen continues to reimagine classics from the Adidas Originals catalog through a fashion-forward lens informed by his East Asian roots. Since joining the Three Stripes from the Swoosh, the multi-hyphenate creative has brought crepe soles to the Gazelle and dress shoe-like hard bottoms to the shell-toe. For his latest effort, Chen has reimagined the iconic Stan Smith as espadrilles.
Reminiscent of styles from his inaugural collection with Adidas Originals, the reworked Stan Smith delivers a refreshing take on the decades-old sportswear design. In comparison to its predecessors, CLOT's Stan Smith Espadrille features both leather and suede construction across its uppers, which don 'Footwear White' and 'Core Black' finishes, respectively. Perforated 3-Stripes at the profiles reprise their roles, faithfully recreating the shoes first assigned to Robert Haillet. Achilles' heel panels indulge in grass-reminiscent 'Green,' making the shoes instantly recognizable.
Underfoot, the tennis-informed sole unit is abandoned in favor of a jute twine build typical of espadrilles. The outsole features tread in the shape of trefoil logos, a detail that's appeared on other Originals offerings. As with other projects by Chen for the German sportswear brand, co-branding appears on the insole. Additionally, Chinese characters are embroidered onto the forefoot, connecting East and West.
